Early Life and Education

Kamala Devi Harris was born in Oakland, California, on October 20, 1964. Her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, was a biologist from India, and her father, Donald Harris, was an economist from Jamaica. The Harris family moved to various locations in the United States during Kamala's childhood, including Berkeley, California, and Montreal, Canada.

Harris attended Howard University in Washington, D.C., where she earned a bachelor's degree in political science and economics. She then went on to earn a law degree from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law.

Political Career

Harris began her political career as a prosecutor in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. She was later elected District Attorney of San Francisco in 2003, becoming the first African American and the first woman to hold that position.

In 2011, Harris was elected Attorney General of California, making her the first woman and the first African American to hold that position as well. As Attorney General, Harris focused on criminal justice reform, including reducing recidivism and addressing racial disparities in the criminal justice system.

In 2016, Harris was elected to the United States Senate. She became the second African American woman to serve in the Senate, after Carol Moseley Braun.

Vice President of the United States

In 2020, Harris was elected Vice President of the United States, becoming the first woman, the first African American, and the first Asian American to hold that position. As Vice President, Harris has played a key role in the Biden administration, particularly on issues related to criminal justice reform, immigration, and climate change.

Harris is married to Douglas Emhoff, a lawyer. They have two children, Cole and Ella.
