Pete Buttigieg: A Rising Star in American Politics

Early Life and Education

Peter Paul Montgomery Buttigieg was born in South Bend, Indiana on January 19, 1982.

He is the son of Joseph Buttigieg, a University of Notre Dame professor, and Jennifer Anne (Montgomery) Buttigieg, a speech therapist. Buttigieg graduated from St. Joseph High School in South Bend and went on to attend Harvard University, where he majored in history and literature.

After graduating from Harvard, Buttigieg won a Rhodes Scholarship to study at the University of Oxford, where he earned a degree in philosophy, politics, and economics. During his time at Oxford, he also served as President of the Oxford Union, the prestigious debating society.

Military Service

After graduating from Oxford, Buttigieg returned to the United States and joined the U.S. Navy Reserve.

He served in Afghanistan as an intelligence officer from 2014 to 2015, and he left the Navy in 2017 with the rank of lieutenant commander.

Political Career

Buttigieg's political career began in 2011 when he was elected to the South Bend City Council.

He served as mayor of South Bend from 2012 to 2020, during which time he oversaw the city's economic revitalization and became known for his progressive policies.

In 2020, Buttigieg ran for the Democratic nomination for president. He finished fourth in the Iowa caucuses, but he went on to win the New Hampshire primary and several other contests. He eventually withdrew from the race and endorsed former Vice President Joe Biden.
